Hi Alberto,
we are very glad that you decided to join our project and will develop it with us.
We still don't have any fixed plan about the audio circuit yet, just a vague idea how what kind of soundscape we are aiming for.
Basically for the repetitive processes from the laminate we would like to get multilayered jingling sounds which would be modulated by interventions from the mycelia/visitor.
Multilayer jingling sounds can resemble old music box sounds, but it would be nice if they would have more metallic deepness or metallic glitches. Examples just to give you the feeling of the sounds we had in mind: http://www.freesound.org/people/ross63m … ds/18618/, http://www.freesound.org/people/Bristol … ds/65916/, http://www.freesound.org/people/j1987/sounds/72621/, http://www.freesound.org/people/DJ%20Ch … ds/31600/.
For the modulations of the mycelia it would be nice to get electrified, sparkling, electro static feeling. Examples: http://www.freesound.org/people/suonho/sounds/4013/, http://www.freesound.org/people/suonho/sounds/4005/ (first part).
This are just rough ideas and sounds are obviously not made from PCBs/ICs, but maybe they can give us a starting point to start developing. So if you have any suggestions, ideas, comments after reading this please feel free to reply, ask, contact us.
Best,
Sasa, Mirjan, Anil.
Hi Sasa!
Have you considered using software in addition to (or instead) the PCB phase?
Hi Saša,
I've applied as a collaborator for your project.
I've read that you are looking for advisers for audio circuits. I have a little experience in it (expecially amplifiers and oscillators) but I'm interested to work more on.
I think that it will be great if we can get in contact soon as possible for discuss what you are looking for as we can start to think about the proper solution(s), research about schematics and whatever may be useful.
Alberto
Mycophone
by Saša Spačal, Mirjan Švagelj, Anil Podgornik
Mycophone draws from idea of music box, where synthesis of non biological /electronic and mechanical/ and biological organisms /mycelia/ happens. Mycophone tries to combine a new biotech organism in a techno-logical way.
Abstract
Mycophone makes sounds like many of biological organisms do and if you pet it on its hairy mycelia fur its sound changes, it may even starts to purr. As any other biological being it needs maintenance /turning the windup key/ to be and care /petting/ to live to its highest potential.
But as any other organism it has patterns, repetitive processes, that have to be met for it to exists. They are there to process the signal that has been put into it with the energy of turning the windup key. These patterns are seen as graphical patterns on the laminate and heard as repetitive sound that is being transformed by the growth of mycelia as well as proximity or touch of a hand of the explorer of the mycophone.

Saša Spačal is an intermedia artist, who is currently working in the fields of graphic design, real-time interactive video production and intermedia art.
She has taken part in exhibitions in Moderna galerija, Galerija Škuc and Galerija Alkatraz. As a member of Temp group she had participated in public interventions and installations. As a researcher, she had taken part in the international research project Performing the City. Art Actionism in Public Space in 1960s/1970s that had made its rounds in Munich, Naples, São Paulo, and Paris. Her latest interactive instalation 7K: new life form was presented in Slovenia at Haip festival, Czech Republic at Enter 5: Datapolis, art/sci/tech biennale Prague, and Turkey at AmberFest’11: Next Ecology. Currently she is studying the connections of technological and biological organisms in the field of interactive visualization and developing physical interfaces for generating sound and visuals as a member of Theremidi Orchestra.
Mirjan Švagelj is currently working for a biotech R&D company. He finished his doctoral studies in Biomedicine at the University of Ljubljana in the field of medicinal mushrooms.
