Hilo: Ophiodea
Ophiodea
by Laura Gabriela Olalde
Ophiodea proposes new ways of seeing our environment. Metaphorically based on compound eyes in nature, it aims to explore collaborative ways of recycling obsolete camera objects.
Abstract
Ophiodea consists in the construction of a compound eye based on multiple cells or lens inspired on the Ophiocoma Wendtii organism. In these special kind of organisms, skin becomes a visual organ as well as a tactile one.
The sculptural object will have all over its surface, inserted lenses of recycled cameras and light sensitive cells. The local community will be invited to join the project by bringing their old cams.
As the surface is translucid, it will be the screen on which we will see the processed images coming from an inside projector, offering a unique way of visualization.
My profile
I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I live and work. I’m a visual artist formed in painting and photography, which was my very first approach to the relationship between technology and image. During the past several years, I began to investigate and to incorporate, step by step, new media in my work. It is the development of this work what lead me to investigate the new possibilities that technologies and collaborative exchanges bring to art & technology projects. During 2008 I collaborated in several projects at Interactivos?08 Vision Play at Medialab-Prado Madrid. One year later I began a Masters Degree on the Theory and Aesthetics of Electronic Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
During these years I have participated in several exhibitions. My most recent work was exhibited at Fundación Telefónica, Buenos Aires. This last project consisted in an interactive installation, with no wires, no electronics… it was called Quorum Sensing, and the title refers to a natural reaction in micro organisms that under certain conditions become visible through bioluminescence phenomena.
The relationship between art and nature, especially when art and creation regards natural processes, is the subject of my Masters Thesis. The Ophiodea project relates to this subject.
