Hilo: Ophiodea

Ophiodea
by Laura Gabriela Olalde

Ophiodea proposes new ways of seeing our environment. Metaphorically based on compound eyes in nature, it aims to explore collaborative ways of recycling obsolete camera objects.

Abstract

Ophiodea consists in the construction of a compound eye based on multiple cells or lens inspired on the Ophiocoma Wendtii organism. In these special kind of organisms, skin becomes a visual organ as well as a tactile one.
The sculptural object will have all over its surface, inserted lenses of recycled cameras and light sensitive cells. The local community will be invited to join the project by bringing their old cams.
As the surface is translucid, it will be the screen on which we will see the processed images coming from an inside projector, offering a unique way of visualization.

My profile

I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I live and work. I’m a visual artist formed in painting and photography, which was my very first approach to the relationship between technology and image. During the past several years, I began to investigate and to incorporate, step by step, new media in my work. It is the development of this work what lead me to investigate the new possibilities that technologies and collaborative exchanges bring to art & technology projects. During 2008 I collaborated in several projects at Interactivos?08 Vision Play at Medialab-Prado Madrid. One year later I began a Masters Degree on the Theory and Aesthetics of Electronic Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

During these years I have participated in several exhibitions. My most recent work was exhibited at Fundación Telefónica, Buenos Aires. This last project consisted in an interactive installation, with no wires, no electronics… it was called Quorum Sensing, and the title refers to a natural reaction in micro organisms that under certain conditions become visible through bioluminescence phenomena.

The relationship between art and nature, especially when art and creation regards natural processes, is the subject of my Masters Thesis. The Ophiodea project relates to this subject.

Re: Ophiodea

Hi Laura
Im interested being your collaborator for the project. I have my self thinking of hacking my old cameras but with different reasons - Im working on light illusions in istallations so my approach is focused on the degenerated image and the illusions of present and matter
Im currently study PhD Transmedia program in Sint Lucas University in Brussels. My research is about how light influence our perception of space

Re: Ophiodea

Hi Pepa!

Thank you for your interest in the project!

Visual perception is one of the subjects implied in the project, essaying simultaneous and different points of view and resulting images composed from this "input" way. Inspired by visual systems in some organisms in nature, it metaphorically invites to try other ways of perceiving our immediate environment. The reassignment of new uses for old and obsoletes cameras, emphasizes this sense looking once again to new responses in nature, learning how it manage to be the most sustentable known system.

There will be two phases in the project. In the first one we have to collect and recycle cameras, try multi cameras capture and image processing. I want to essay which number of cams can be supported by system. I think the most suitable ones will be webcams. I would like to visualize processed image resulting in  addition to some data coming from light sensors. The second phase will be mounting and constructing the object.
You can participate by collecting and recycling old cameras, programming, mounting and constructing the object, as well as in the project documentation and supporting concept discussion
Therefore, welcome to join the project !

Re: Ophiodea

Hola Laura:

Profiles of potential collaborators

Programmers with experience in real time image processing, using Processing or openFrameworks.
Programmers with experience in  generative digital animation.
Collaborators with knowledge of Arduino and electronics.
Collaborators with knowledge of modeling latex and similar materials.
Partners for assembling structure and montage of prototype.
Social collaborators for interaction with local community, providing info about the project and by promoting participation through the recollection of obsolete cameras in order to be recycled and used in the project.

I can't define exactly the number of collaborators required, but I expect to count on, at least, one collaborator for each profile required, taking account that it is possible too to take part of several aspects involved in the process depending of knowledge and skills of each one.

Saludos!

Re: Ophiodea

Hello!
I have used processing a few times for video processing and also have experience with electronics and micro controllers.

Will be very glad to help!

Re: Ophiodea

That's great, Hecktorzr! Wellcome to the project!

These days I've been doing some trials with webcams. I tried with 6 and 8 cameras using a processing sketch (with local collaborator help), so we have a base on which we can continue, by adding variations and new trials.

What I would really like to try is to give to Ophiodea organism some kind of movement, adding a motor and a proper mechanism controlled by arduino based on inputs that come from sensors. We could try to do that too!

Any sugestion is wellcome too!

See you in Ljubljana!
